From its definition, psychiatry is a study of mental illnesses and disorders focusing on treatment, diagnostics and prevention. It is an official branch of medicine (the status given owing to the proof of infectious origin of so called progressive paralysis) and Emil Kraepelin is considered the father of psychiatry. In the 19th century he created a synthesis and classification of tens of at that time known mental illnesses, defining two main categories – maniodepressive and dementia praecox (schizophrenia).

Our department treats patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis and provides psychological care. Our goal is to prevent mental illnesses and offer clinical care for adults and children from the age of three. However, our priority is not really the treatment of chronic mental diseases – our attention focuses on acute psychiatric/psychological care. We provide the highest quality basic and specialised health service. Moreover, we serve as a methodological centre for fields of Psychiatry and Clinical psychology in the region of Brno.

Other essential activities include research (focusing on psychotherapy and biological psychiatry), education and last but not least participation in society programmes fighting against alcoholism and other addictions.
