Neuroimaging group

At the end of 1990s we started with neuroimaging studies in psychiatry - CT of the brain in schizophrenia and SPECT in depressive disorder (prof. Ceskova). Prof. Přikryl followed with his dissertation thesis on brain perfusion in depressive disorder in 2002. The availability of MRI enabled to start a project evaluating morphology of hippocampus in first episodes of schizophrenia - first by planimetric measurement, later by volumetric measurement within the frames of the dissertation thesis of assoc. prof. Kašpárek.
After functional MRI imaging has been made available in Brno in 2003 (Department of Imaging methods of University Hospital at St.Anna´s - FNUsA), we have become a part of a multidisciplinary team (along with the 1st Neurology and the Neurosurgery Departments of FNUsA, now under the umbrella of CEITEC-MU), introducing the methodology of fMRI into neuroscientific research in Brno. At the beginning we concentrated on functional imaging of hippocampus during memory coding (dr. Přikryl, dr. Kašpárek), followed by the analysis of fronto-temporal areas (dr. Přikryl, dr. Kašpárek, dr. Kučerová) and on the analysis of the resting state of the brain (resting state fMRI).

Studying of brain morphology is further proceeding after the introduction of voxel-based morphometry (assoc. prof. Kašpárek,) and related methods such as deformation-based morphometry (assoc. prof. Kašpárek, ing. Schwarz) and source-based morphometry (assoc. prof. Kašpárek, ing. Mareček).

Since 2008 we cooperate with the Department of Radiology of the University Hospital Brno on implementation of the diffusion tensor imaging focusing on the integrity of white matter in schizophrenia (assoc. prof. Kašpárek, dr. Keřkovský, dr. Huttlova, dr. Šprláková) and on multimodal imaging by means of the combination of fMRI, DTI and VBM.

Recently we started to exploit the multidimensional machine learning techniques in classification studies of first-episode schizophrenia (Kasparek, Schwarz, Janousova, Dluhos).

Neurostimulation group

Neurostimulation is widely used in clinical practice of our department. Habilitation thesis of assoc. prof. Rysanek was focused on electroconvulsive therapy. Later on, in 2005 the Department of Psychiatry purchased a new Magstim machine for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Prof. Prikryl started a successful clinical controlled trial that proved the efficacy of rTMS in the treatment of negative symptoms in schizophrenia. The group continues in the work in this area, searching for novel protocols of stimulation and novel symptom clusters than may respond to the rTMS treatment. Dr. Ustohal started neurofyziological analyses using silent period analysis in the first-episode schizophrenia patients. The group is also involved in the treatment of refractory Major depression using vagal nerve stimulation.

First-episode of psychosis group

At the end of 1990s prof. Češková started a longitudinal cohort of first-episode schizophrenia patients with the aim to find biologicals predictors of long term outcome. She introduced state-of-the-art methods of theat time, including morphological parameters computed from CT scans, Neurological soft signs, neuroendocrinological parameters, cognitive functions. Later on prof. Prikryl and assoc. prof. Kasparek joined the team and novel neuroimaging techniques as well as novel neuropsychological approaches (dr. Kucerova-Prikrylova) were introduced. The project continues to fulfill its main objectives - course and outcome prediction using objective measures.

Electrophysiology group

Electrophysiology is another traditional focus of research at the Deparment of Psychiatry. It was introduced by prof. Misurec in 1970s, who was involved in quantitative pharmaco-EEG. Later on the EEG method was re-introduced into the research with the help of dr. Riecansky from Slovak Academy of Sciences in a study of steady-state visual responses during 40 Hz photic stimulation in schizophrenia. The EEG lab has been equipped with a hd-EEG machine (128 channel EGI machine) with a multimodal stimulation workstation recently.

Psychopharmacology group

Psychopharmacology was a leading subject of research from the very beginnings of the Department. In the national context Brno school of psychopharmacology was recognized in 1960-90s. A number of original RCTs with novel antidepressants and antipsychotics were conducted there. The leading figures of that era were prof. Nahunek, prof. Svestka, prof. Ceskova. Psychopharmacology continues to be a major research area nowadays, however, the focused moved to the safety profile in the context of pharmacogenetics (CYP450, P-glycoprotein), to the time-course of antipsychotic treatment (onset of effect), and the assessment of plasma levels of psychopharmacs in relation to clinical efficacy. Here, fruitful co-opperation with the Department of Pharmacology of the Faculty of Medicine, Masaryk University was established.

Eating disorders and emotional awareness research group

A new group started its work with the arrival of dr. Svetlak. He started a treatment program for Eating disorders focused on emotional awareness and the research is focused on the analysis of emotional awareness deficits in psychosomatic disorders, the potential for change and treatment utilization.

ADHD research group

ADHD is a major focus of Child and Adolescence psychiatry ward of our department. Comprehensive diagnostic and treatment approaches are implemented there. The department contributed to the molecular genetic studies of ADHD, with the major focus on genes involved in dopaminergic neurotransmition and brain repair mechanisms.
